Small Town Character and Community Identity
As a Vision of DP Davis, I was a mere dredging
from the bottom of the bay, born of marsh and sand,
surrounded by water. I have nurtured generations and
they gave me character and identity. The long wake
of that identity became my heritage. I am pastel-kissed
colors on a sky blue pallet. I am Davis Islands, and
I am loved.
Davis Islands has a small town character and a strong
community identity that has been protected and enhanced
over time.
The Islands' rich heritage has been preserved, and elements
of D.P. Davis' (the founder) vision have been recreated.
The bridge and the streetlights are reminiscent of
the 1920s and Mediterranean Revival architecture are
preserved and protected voluntarily.
The islands community has a pleasant scale to it,
as one would expect with a small town. Buildings are
typically low-scale in height, oriented to the street
and designed for the pedestrian.
Davis Islands has many amenities that are important
to its small town character and community identify.
They include: a hospital, airport, yacht club, public
marina, swimming pool, water front parks, Village
Center, green space, trees, outdoor space, gathering
spaces and water.
The public access to and views of the water make island
living very special, and these have been protected
and enhanced.
The streets are beautiful; tree-lined, with old-fashioned
lights and sidewalks for pedestrians. Lushly landscaped
medians narrow the flow of traffic and slow it down.
Pedestrian and bicycles safety rule. It is easy to
move around the islands by car, but the island is
designed first for pedestrian and bicycle convenience
and safety.
Islanders are friendly by nature. The pleasant environment,
design of buildings and number of gathering places
invite personal interaction and promote social well-being.
Spaces are designed for passive surveillance, and
neighbors watch out for each other.
The Islanders have a friendly, caring and supporting
feeling towards the business community. The village
center is well supported by them. The businesses tend
to be independently owned, and they participate in
community activities.
People can live their whole lives on Davis Islands.
There are housing choices and most services that are
needed for every stage of life.
