This document is the shared Vision of the way Davis Islands is, could be and should be in the minds of its residents.

Each section below distills the collective thoughts of Davis Islands residents who participated in community-wide meetings, study circles and public Task Force meetings.

Small Town Character and Community Identity

Graphic Davis Islands has a small town character and a strong community identity that has been protected and enhanced over time.

The islands' rich heritage has been preserved, and elements of the vision of D.P. Davis, founder and developer, have been recreated. The bridge and the streetlights are reminiscent of the 1920s and Mediterranean Revival architecture are preserved and protected voluntarily.

Getting Around

graphic

Getting around Davis Islands is safe. Traffic moves slowly and pedestrians and bicyclists are not threatened. Parents feel comfortable letting their children travel around the Islands freely.

Non-motorized transportation is given a high priority. The elements that make walking and bicycling a good experience are also elements that enhance the livability of a place.

Environmental Quality

Graphic

The health of Hillsborough Bay is important to Davis Islanders. It is the water that surrounds us and defines us as islands. The water is clean and people can swim in it safely.

Manatees are occasionally sighted and they are protected. Water access points are kept clean of litter and run-off into the bay is minimized. Drainage is filtered and sedimentation is cleaned from the canals regularly.

Community Appearance

Graphic

Davis Islands is a beautiful community. It is a thoughtfully planned balance of different uses that are pleasing to look at, integrated with one another and functional.
Buildings are low-scale in height and oriented to the road.

The community appearance can be best described as "friendly" and "neighborly".

Our Heritage

Graphic

Davis Islands has a very unique heritage and it is embraced. It is a defining point for Davis Islanders' identity.

Key elements of the founder's plan (D.P. Davis) are accented or recreated. Those elements include the redesign of the bridges and installation of old-style street lighting throughout the islands.

Public Safety

Graphic

The Islands are a safe place for everyone to move around freely. People travel in cars at a safe speed, and bicyclists and pedestrians feel safe and respected.

Public spaces are attractively designed to encourage passive surveillance.

Housing

graphic

Davis Islands is predominately single-family detached housing. Landscaped, green front yards extend to the public domain of the streets. Neighbors socialize and children play on the lawns, the sidewalks and even the street.

There are areas of the island available for multi-family dwellings and townhouses. The areas are limited, and each is attractively designed and planned to blend in with the Islands and encourage social interaction.

Water, Sewer Services and Other Utilities

Graphic

All overhead wires, including cable, electric and telephone lines are now buried underground to protect against coastal hazards and to improve the appearance of the community.

The quality of storm water run-off into the bay and canals has been very much improved and innovative technologies are employed to greatly reduce pollutants and sediment run-off.

People

Graphic

Davis Islanders actively participate in community events, and government relations. Islanders demand the right to be consulted before outside public interests do anything on the Islands that might affect the quality of their lives.

Islanders enjoy their traditions and celebrations, and they strengthen their sense of community through their participation.
