The Davis Islands Chamber of Commerce wants to raise people's consciousness about the area's speeding problem.
They aim to do that with a bumper sticker.

Underground power lines. Bicycle lanes. Ample parking. Caring citizens.
Those are some of the goals for Davis Islands, according to members of a neighborhood planning task force.
The committee of 10 residents and one business owner presented its vision for the community Nov. 20 at Davis Islands Baptist Church. About 100 residents stopped by to review the set of vision statements and offer input that will help the task force refine general concepts.

DAVIS ISLANDS - A sleigh stocked with presents and covered in Christmas lights rode through Davis Islands on Tuesday night. Santa Claus and his merry elf sat inside on a black leather couch, smiling and spreading good cheer.
The idea was simple: Santa would stop at 27 Davis Islands locations, receiving gifts to give to needy children.
And the idea worked. Santa collected 2,000 or more presents, said Jeanne Lavettre, who helped organize the event. At most stops, Santa found oodles of homeowners eager to give.

Ideas flowed when about 50 Davis Islands residents recently met with city officials to try to solve the longstanding speeding problem on Adalia Avenue.
Action, however, will likely be months away.
"There is no funding to do anything right now," city traffic engineer Debbie Harrington said during the meeting last week at Davis Islands Baptist Church.

Well-wishers began pulling up about 8 a.m. and found seats on the backs of cars and bikes to pay their final respects to a dear buddy - the Davis Island Yacht Club clubhouse.
Demolition crews cranked up promptly at 9 to chew at the walls and porches that have been added on, painted, repainted and rebuilt in the past 47 years. A new structure is set to rise in its place by June 30.

SOUTH TAMPA - The Davis Islands Farmers Market soon may be stocked with scotch and whiskey - and that is not the only change taking place there.
Open a little more than a year, the market is at 202 E. Davis Blvd., where the Amoco station used to be. The market sells beer and wine, fresh-cut flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables.

For years, Hamilton Jones admired the Palace of Florence on Davis Islands. He loved the building's rich history and its Mediterranean-style architecture.
He envisioned restoring the former apartment hotel to its original grandeur and renting it out to aesthetic-minded tenants. Some day, it would be the star of his apartment complex collection.
Seven years ago, Jones got his wish. When the 1926 building on Davis Boulevard came on the market, he snapped it up.

When Charles Bishop slammed a single-engine plane into the 28th floor of the Bank of America building in downtown Tampa on Saturday, the final act of a troubled teenager struck home in more ways than one.
``I've flown that plane,'' a stunned Chuck Yeager the Elder said when he read the Cessna 172R's identification number on the tail section of the aircraft as television cameras captured it dangling from the building.
